An accountant who understands the work of DJs, musicians and artists

As a DJ, musician or other performing artist, you deal with fees, royalties and sometimes performances abroad. At SMG Administratie you're in the right place for your complete administration.

As a DJ or musician you often have an irregular income pattern: several bookings one weekend, few the next. You may also receive fees via a fee form or invoice, and sometimes royalties via Buma/Stemra or Sena if you produce or release your own tracks. For artists booked from abroad, or who perform abroad themselves, the artist tax scheme (artiestenregeling) may also apply. We know these income streams and help process them correctly in your administration.

Do you sometimes perform abroad? Part of your fee may then be withheld there as foreign withholding tax, which you may be able to offset in the Netherlands under certain conditions. The VAT treatment of international performances also requires specialist knowledge. In addition, your equipment (controllers, mixers, instruments, sound and lighting) and travel costs may be deductible business expenses, depending on your situation.

We work for DJs, musicians and other artists in Zaandam, Amsterdam, Purmerend and across the Netherlands, fully online via our app.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from DJs & artists

Do I have to charge VAT on my fee as a DJ or musician?
Yes, as an entrepreneur you are in principle liable for VAT on your fee. For performances abroad, the VAT reverse-charge mechanism may apply. We assess this per booking.
What is the artist tax scheme (artiestenregeling) and does it apply to me?
The artiestenregeling is a separate set of wage tax rules for artists booked by a Dutch client, and under certain conditions it can also apply to performances abroad. Whether and how this applies to your situation depends on your specific circumstances. We're happy to assess this together with you.
What do I do with income from Buma/Stemra or Sena?
These royalties are taxable turnover and are included in your annual figures. Buma/Stemra and Sena provide an annual statement; we process it correctly, so nothing is declared twice.
